Re: Public Act 2012-81   Adult Learners Permit (ALP)
This law is effective January 01, 2013
The State of Connecticut now requires ANY  new driver OVER AGE 18 to obtain an Adult Learner Permit (ALP) prior to receiving Behind The Wheel training from a professional instructor at State licensed driving schools.
This new law (Public Act 2012-81) is effective: January 1, 2013

Obtaining a Connecticut License for the first time
(age 18 or older)
Effective October 01,2008...ALL applicants 18 years of age, or older, who have NOT previously held a license in Connecticut or who do NOT have a valid license from any other State will be REQUIRED to take an 8 HOUR COURSE on SAFE DRIVING PRACTICES and present a certificate to the DMV showing proof of attending this course - in order to be licensed in the State of Connecticut.
  • We recommend that you (if over age 18) register for one of our scheduled courses prior to attempting to schedule a TEST at the DMV - since you will need to demonstrate that you have completed the course FIRST... In addition - AFTER January 01, 2013 - you will need to hold an ADULT LEARNER PERMIT for a period of no less than 90 days BEFORE you can obtain a Connecticut Operator's License (see the information posted above).
  • If you present yourself at the DMV for testing without the required 8 HOUR COURSE CERTIFICATE - AND  - without having held an ADULT LEARNER PERMIT for a minimum of 90 DAYS - you will be refused a test.
  • We offer the 8 HOUR COURSE twice a month at our classroom facility, located at 415 Boston Post Road (Milford, CT 06460). Please note that we have a mandated FIRE CODE and cannot accommodate more students than the FIRE CODE permits. To be fair to ALL students...each class will be CLOSED to other students when this mandated FIRE CODE is reached. We recommend that you register for this course as soon as you are able to - since ALL students are accommodated on a "first come - first served" basis.
  • To ASSURE a place in the class...we recommend that the student PREPAY for the chosen class. Once the student has PREPAID for the class - the student is ASSURED a seat in the class.  ALSO: a student that choses to PREPAY for the 8 HOUR COURSE will receive a DISCOUNT.
  • Students currently registered and involved in our training programs, are always given priority for seating in the 8 HOUR COURSE - since their tuition fees include the required 8 HOUR COURSE.
  • Since WE are involved in the administration of these State requirements on a daily basis...and students most likely will find this to be "confusing" as well as stressful...please Call us: (203) 878 0918. We cannot always be in the office...so if you get the VOICEMAIL...leave a message and we WILL return your call as soon as we get it.  We promise!
Additional Information: for ADULTS and HOME TRAINED TEENS
  • The DMV does not permit the 8 HOUR COURSE to be done in  single 24 hour day. Therefore - we offer the course in multiple parts. MOST of the classes will be in 3 PARTS and offered every other week starting on a SATURDAY - see information below - each PART of the  8 HOUR COURSE is a two (2) hour segment.
  • NOTE: Some of the 8 HOUR COURSES are scheduled for TWO days: Saturday (4 HOURS) and Sunday (4 HOURS). Please contact our office to ask about 2DAY - WEEKEND ONLY classes - for the 8 HOUR COURSE.
  1. SATURDAY - from 2PM to 6PM (4 Hours - Part 1 and Part 2)   FOUR (4) HOURS
  2. SUNDAY - from 7PM to 9PM (Part 3)    TWO (2) HOURS
  3. WEDNESDAY - FROM 7PM TO 9PM (PART 4)    TWO (2) HOURS
- OR -

ADULT IN-CAR TRAINING
  • We offer Adult In-Car Training for any student OVER the age of 18. Since the 8 HOUR COURSE mentioned above, on this page, is a mandatory requirement of the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles - we require that our adult in-car students complete this course FIRST  before scheduling the on-road training....as this facilitates the efficiency of the training (in simpler terms: It saves in-car time...and MORE can be done in a lesson)
  • The on-road LESSON PLANS immediately use the information presented in this 8 HOUR COURSE for the ORIENTATION lesson plan and for all of the continuing training in the training schedule.
  • We can schedule on-road training time for students who have NOT taken the required 8 HOUR COURSE with our school. However, the ORIENTATION lesson plan (first lesson) is modified to include the essential information from the SAFE DRIVING PRACTICES part of the 8 HOUR COURSE.
  • As an alternative - students who have completed the 8 HOUR COURSE at another school MAY come in to the first part of our 8 HOUR COURSE (that is "sit in") at NO charge - to prepare for the in-car training. This will SAVE having to introduce the "seeing habits" information in the car while doing the in-car lesson.
  • To "sit-in" at NO charge, as a preparation for behind-the-wheel training: the STUDENT MUST BE REGISTERED FOR SCHEDULED ON-ROAD TRAINING - AND- BE PREPAID. See additional information on how to do this in the section on TRAINING PROGRAMS.
