TRAINING COURSE
("TEEN" Drivers)

The department of Motor Vehicles in the State of Connecticut considers anyone UNDER the age of 18 to be a "teen driver".
IF you are OVER age 18 - please see the part of this information page for "adults".
If you are thinking of beginning the training to become licensed, you MUST have reached your 16th Birthday BEFORE you can sign-up to begin classes. The legal requirements may seem overwhelming at first...don't give up...remember that many people have done this before you (including your parents - and maybe some of your friends). Keep in mind the old joke about how to eat an ELEPHANT....one bite at a time!  In the list below are SOME of the things that you will need to know...remember to enjoy the process - it's easier than you think.
THIS IS NOT EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW - BUT IT'S A GOOD START FOR NOW
  • The MOST important favor you can do for yourself is to go the the Department of Motor Vehicles web site (the link is on the NEXT page: CONNECTICUT DMV) and download the Connecticut DRIVER'S MANUAL for new drivers.  You will need to STUDY this BEFORE you attempt to do your PERMIT test. The download can be saved as a PDF file and carried around on your smart phone - your tablet - your laptop - or...it can be printed out and carried around just like your other printed information.
  • The PERMIT test consists of 25 multiple choice questions. To pass the test and be issued a LEARNER'S PERMIT - you must get 20 questions answered correctly. (Actually you really want to get 100% - why not start off your training this way!!). Remember that: - the PERMIT test is ALSO your driver's license test, and will be counted toward your license testing. You DO want to do well on this!
  • DO NOT discard the DRIVER'S MANUAL once you do have the LEARNER'S PERMIT. You will continue to need it as a resource as you prepare for the ON ROAD part of the license test. After all, NO one remembers everything just by reading it only once.
  • The next MOST IMPORTANT favor you can do for yourself is to go to the TEEN section of the DMV web site - and spend some time there learning the legal requirements for teen licensing. There is a LOT to know. Don't try to consume it all in just ONE visit. Take it a little at a time. We get questions from teens, adults and parents every day....and we have discovered that almost 99% of those licensing questions are answered on the DMV web site. The very FIRST suggestion we always make to our students, is to: GO TO THE WEB SITE at DMV! This information is updated by the DMV frequently. Use it as a resource. Not only will knowing the "rules" reduce your stress level (you can't play the game if you don't know the rules) - but also when you discuss driving and licensing with your friends (as you know you will)...you will sound SO SMART!
  • As you continue the licensing process - return HERE as often as you can to see what WE have posted. As information becomes available to us, we will pass it on to you. Check out our BLOG postings and the links we provide to interesting topics, ideas, other sites, and anything we think will make your journey easier. If you HAVE to do something - you may as well ENJOY it.   And ...YES...GOOD LUCK...drive safely...you know your life depends on it!

Adult Drivers

The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles considers anyone OVER the age of 18 to be an "ADULT" driver. The legal requirements as well as the procedures for obtaining a license in Connecticut are different for the ADULT driver than they are for the TEEN driver.  ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE ADULT TRAINING PROGRAMS CAN BE FOUND ON  THE "DRUG & ALCOHOL" PAGE - SINCE ALL OVER AGE 18 STUDENTS MUST  TAKE THE DRUG & ALCOHOL COURSE FIRST.

The MILFORD DRIVING SCHOOL began to offer this course as a training agency for the NSC, in July of 1996. To date we have successfully retrained more than 10,000 Connecticut drivers.
The course began as a Federal mandate to all of the States to "retrain" drivers who had multiple "moving" violations  or drivers that had suspended licenses. Each State was allowed to decide the length of the retraining course as well as the content of the course and the providers for the course.
Initially, the State of Connecticut - through the Department of Motor Vehicles - did the retraining directly. But as the State of Connecticut expanded the mandate to include younger drivers (who were just beginning to get into violations) and also included the trigger of fewer tickets (to catch the beginning of bad habits early). Soon the State through the Department of Motor Vehicles was unable to handle the number of drivers needing the retraining classes.
The State of Connecticut turned to the National Safety Council to become a provider for the training. This was a natural move, since the National Safety Council was already providing similar retraining courses in many other States.
As the retraining program expanded and became successful, the Milford Driving School was invited to apply to become a training agency for NSC programs in Connecticut.
Once we were certified and became a member of the National Safety Council we interviewed and hired several excellent instructors. These instructors had already been trained and certified by the NSC to teach the retraining program. One of the instructors, Paul G. Mohyde had been a DMV inspector, working for the Department of Motor Vehicles - and had been one of the DMV instructors teaching the course when the DMV was doing the retraining internally. He was a "natural" fit to do it for the NSC. The other instructor, Steve Ronning, was also certified and had experience doing the course.
Participants in the retraining classes are given an EVALUATION form to fill out at the end of the 4-hour class.  SOME OF THE RECENT STUDENT COMMENTS ARE BELOW - CHECK THEM OUT:
